FUNDAMENTALS
How should you choose data center equipment?
Choosing equipment is not a catalog question but a sizing question. Three inputs determine the decision: actual and planned IT load in kilowatts, the availability expected, and the constraints of the existing infrastructure — the incoming supply available, the space, and how much heat can be rejected.
The electrical and cooling sides have to be sized together. Every kilowatt of IT load produces heat that has to be carried away, and the cooling itself consumes electricity. Optimizing the two separately typically produces an oversized UPS and undersized cooling.
Rack density decides what is even in scope. At a few kW per rack, conventional room-level air conditioning is enough; above 15–20 kW per rack, cooling cannot be done economically without in-row or liquid cooling. That decision has to be made before the equipment is bought, not after.

VENDOR INDEPENDENCE
Why we don’t supply from a single manufacturer
One manufacturer's portfolio is rarely the best in every subsystem. Buying the entire mechanical and electrical package from a single brand typically means a compromise at one point at least, and the compromise shows up where it is most expensive to fix.
A vendor-independent approach does not mean a different brand for everything, though. Monitoring and control integration, service support and spare parts supply are all simpler when the elements of one system belong to the same family. The practical rule: consistent within a subsystem, free between subsystems.
The decision is driven by total cost of ownership, not purchase price. A higher-efficiency UPS or a precision cooling unit with better part-load characteristics recovers the price difference through energy cost within a few years.

EXPERIENCE
Common mistakes in equipment procurement
Sizing for nominal output instead of the real profile. Equipment efficiency is decided at part load, and most data centers run at part load for most of the time.
Ignoring lead times. For critical equipment the lead time is often measured in months, and it is what determines the project schedule, not the length of construction.
Redundancy counted in units. Two UPS units are not 2N in themselves if they feed a single distribution board. Redundancy applies to the power path, not to the number of devices.
A skipped compatibility check. How new equipment fits the existing monitoring and control system has to be clarified before ordering.
Buying without warranty and service. Even equipment bought at the best price becomes expensive if there is no service behind it with a committed response time.

Frequently asked questions about data center equipment
Power, cooling, rack, structured cabling, physical security and fire detection equipment — from the medium-voltage incoming supply to rack-level power distribution, and from precision cooling to aspirating smoke detection. The selection is always project-specific: the equipment list is determined by the result of the sizing, not by a pre-packaged range.
It means we are not committed to a single manufacturer's portfolio, so the decision is driven by technical fit and total cost of ownership. In practice we usually recommend one manufacturer within a subsystem, because of monitoring integration and spare parts supply, while choosing freely between subsystems.
The starting point is actual and planned IT load in kilowatts, plus the redundancy target (N+1 or 2N) and the required autonomy time. We size the cooling for the same load, taking rack density and the available heat rejection into account. The two sides have to be calculated together — optimized separately, the result is typically an oversized UPS and undersized cooling.
It varies a great deal by item and by manufacturer: stock items within days, while larger UPS units, gensets and chillers typically arrive on a lead time of several months. That is exactly why procurement has to start during the design phase of the project — the lead time of the critical item sets the schedule, not the length of construction. For a specific project we state current lead times in the quote.
Alongside the manufacturer's base warranty, extended warranty and SLA-based service can also be contracted, with a committed response time. For critical equipment — UPS, genset, precision cooling — regular maintenance and measurement-based condition assessment also tend to be a condition of the warranty.
Within a subsystem, usually yes; between subsystems, usually no. One manufacturer is rarely the best in every area, but the elements of one system are simpler to integrate and service within a single family. The question is not one brand or several, but where you draw the line.
Beyond the price of the equipment, typically delivery and getting it to site, installation and commissioning, integration with the existing system, commissioning documentation, and the warranty and support level chosen. On larger systems, commissioning measurements and handover documentation are separate line items as well.
