INSTALLATION

How a server room installation runs

Building out a server room or data center is rarely greenfield work. Most projects start in a live environment, so installation begins with a site survey: what the existing supply can carry, how much cooling capacity is free, where routes can run, and how much downtime is acceptable.

Work follows the approved detailed design, broken into phases. Routes and cable trays go in first, followed by the electrical installation and the cooling mechanical work, then the rack cabinets and rack-level distribution, and finally the low-voltage systems and the active equipment connections.

Coordinating the trades is the contractor's job, not the client's. Electrical installation, mechanical work, structured cabling, physical security, and fire detection follow one schedule — in a live server room, within pre-agreed maintenance windows, with every phase left in a state that can be rolled back.

Installation closes with commissioning and a documented handover: load and function tests, cable testing and certification, test reports, as-built documentation, and operator training. The server room goes into live service after that.

INSTALLATION QUALITY

What good installation looks like in practice

The quality of an installation shows years later — when something has to be expanded, or when a fault has to be found. You recognize a well-built server room by routes you can follow, cabling that is tidy and labeled, room to work behind the racks, and a power supply that can be expanded without taking everything apart.

So we give route construction, cable management, and labeling the same attention as the installed equipment. Copper cabling and the fiber backbone are tested and certified, the electrical installation is sized, and cooling is checked at the design load rather than empty.

Standard reference frameworks apply to installation as well: in larger data center environments the EN 50600 series or the Uptime Institute Tier classification is often the guide, with the EN standards on the electrical and fire-safety side, alongside national fire-safety regulations and the related technical guidelines. Which of these applies to a given facility, and to what extent, is determined by the designer and the competent authority — we clarify this on every project together with the client's designer. At handover, the as-built documentation, the cable test and certification reports, the electrical test reports, the commissioning report, and the handover record together give the picture a later expansion can start from. The exact contents of the package are set out in the contract.

Frequently asked questions about server room and data center installation

These are the questions that come up most often during server room and data center installation projects. The answers are general information; technical and regulatory questions specific to a project are clarified during the survey, together with the client's designer.

It depends on scale. A server room of a few racks is typically a few weeks; a larger data center phase runs to several months. In many cases the schedule is set not by the installation work but by the manufacturing and delivery times of the equipment — for UPS, precision cooling, and diesel generators this can shift the schedule considerably. We provide a schedule after the survey, with those lead times already included.

Yes — most projects are like this. We break the work into phases, work within pre-agreed maintenance windows, and leave a state that can be rolled back at the end of each phase. The first question in any expansion is always whether the existing power supply and cooling capacity can carry the planned load — that is what the survey establishes.

In practice, scale and redundancy. A server room is typically a few racks serving one building, often with comfort cooling and a single power supply. A data center is orders of magnitude larger, with dedicated precision cooling, redundant power, and fire detection, in an N+1 or 2N configuration. The logic of the installation is similar but the requirement level is different — which is why the first question in the survey is always which of the two it is.

Commissioning is where the installed systems are tested together under load rather than one by one: does the UPS transfer, does the cooling carry the heat at the design load, does the fire alarm system signal, does access control work. Many faults only surface at this point, because the individual trades behave perfectly in isolation. That is why commissioning is part of the installation for us, not a separately orderable option.

This is primarily a business decision rather than a technical automatism: it depends on how much downtime the service being supported can tolerate, and on the available space and operating cost. N+1 means one spare unit alongside the required capacity; 2N means a fully parallel system. We determine the level to build after the survey, together with the client's designer.
